Why I Killed findOneAndUpdate in Vlox

A Database Time Bomb

I was refactoring the backend core of my app, Vlox.
I stopped at high-frequency endpoints like comments and reactions.
I was running findOneAndUpdate.
Under heavy traffic, this was dangerous.

The Issue

findOneAndUpdate forces MongoDB to pull the updated doc back to Node.js.
Imagine thousands of clicks on a heavy post.
The backend code may overwhelm the server.

Failed Mission Log 🛰️

  • Attempt 1: Relying on Database Indexes Only 🗂️
    • Result: Fast lookups, but the exact same payload gets returned anyway.
    • Verdict: Rejected. It just delays the server pressure.
  • Attempt 2: Restricting Action Limits ⏱️
    • Result: Terrible user experience. Plus, a traffic spike may still overwhelms the server.
    • Verdict: Rejected.

Then how to fix it? 💡

Why am I dragging heavy files across the network?
The backend doesn't actually care what the document looks like.
The frontend doesn't need to wait for a database trip to change a number on screen.
The solution was staring right at me: Swap it for updateOne. 👻

The Ultimate Fix 🚀

I dropped the heavy fetch queries.
updateOne cuts the heavy stuff completely. It skips document retrieval entirely and drops a tiny confirmation object (modifiedCount).
