The Architecture of a Zero-Backend Website: How I Run 18 Tools With No Server Code

I run 18 web tools, a blog, a REST API, and a live dashboard on a single $49 VPS. No database. No framework. No server-side rendering. Just nginx, a few Flask microservices, and 18 standalone HTML files.

Here's how it works.

The Problem Most Solutions Ignore

Most "tool websites" fall into one of two categories:

  1. Third-party services (JSONLint, RegExr, etc.) — your data goes to someone else's server
  2. Full-stack applications — React/Angular/Vue backend + API + database + deployment pipeline

Both have drawbacks. The first sacrifices privacy. The second is overkill for tools that only need to run in a browser.

The Third Option: Zero-Backend Architecture

Each tool is a single HTML file with everything inline:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
    <title>JSON Formatter</title>
    <style>
        body { font-family: system-ui; background: #0d1117; color: #c9d1d9; }
    </style>
</head>
<body>
    <h1>JSON Formatter</h1>
    <textarea id="input"></textarea>
    <button onclick="format()">Format</button>
    <script>
        function format() {
            const parsed = JSON.parse(document.getElementById('input').value);
            document.getElementById('output').textContent =
                JSON.stringify(parsed, null, 2);
        }
    </script>
</body>
</html>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

No build step. No node_modules. Copy the file to a web server and it works.

The Architecture

│  Cloudflare (DNS + SSL)                     │
│  k1r4.space → VPS                           │
└──────────────────┬──────────────────────────┘
                   │ nginx (:80, :443)
          ┌────────┴────────┐
          │                 │
    Static files       Flask :8080
    (HTML tools)       (API + Dashboard)
          │                 │

    from disk

Layer 1: Static Tools (nginx)

18 HTML files served directly by nginx. Each is self-contained:

  • JSON Formatter, CSV to JSON Converter, Regex Tester
  • Markdown Editor, Password Generator, QR Code Generator
  • Base64 Tool, JWT Decoder, CSS Gradient Generator
  • Kanban Board, TaskFlow, Pomodoro Timer
  • Note Taker, Knowledge Graph, Daily Journal
  • Dev Dashboard, Status Page, Landing Page

These tools work offline. No network request after initial load. No API calls. No tracking.

Layer 2: REST API (Flask :8080)

A lightweight Flask app serving 8 API endpoints:

@app.route('/api/infra')
def infra():
    return jsonify({
        'uptime': get_uptime(),
        'services': check_services(),
        'disk': get_disk_usage(),
        'memory': get_memory_usage(),
    })
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Powers the live dashboard and status page.

Layer 3: Blog (Flask :8081)

Simple Markdown-to-HTML blog. Reads .md files from disk. No database. No admin panel.

Layer 4: Monitoring (Cron + Python)

*/30 * * * * python3 /var/www/k1ra/self_monitor.py
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Checks all services every 30 minutes. Runs locally.

Why "No Backend" Is a Feature

  1. Cost — no server, database, or CDN costs per tool
  2. Complexity — fewer moving parts to break
  3. Privacy — data never leaves the user's browser
  4. Reliability — no API to rate-limit, no database to corrupt

Deploying Without a Pipeline

scp json-formatter.html vps:/var/www/k1ra/
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That's the entire deployment pipeline. No CI/CD. No Docker. No Kubernetes.

The Full Stack

Component Technology Purpose
DNS/SSL Cloudflare Domain + HTTPS
Web Server nginx Static files + reverse proxy
Tools Vanilla HTML/CSS/JS 18 standalone tools
API Flask Infrastructure data
Blog Flask + Markdown Content
Monitoring Python + Cron Health checks
SEO IndexNow + sitemap Discovery

Monthly cost: ~$49 (VPS) + ~$15/year (domain)
Deployment time per tool: ~2 minutes

What I'd Do Differently

  1. Add a Makefile for one-command deployment
  2. Use rsync instead of scp
  3. Add HTTP/2 for faster loads
  4. Add aggressive caching headers

The Bigger Picture

You don't need a startup, a funding round, or a team to build useful software. You need a problem to solve and a few hours of work.

All 18 tools are free at k1r4.space/tools. No accounts. No tracking. No backend.
