TL;DR
HeyGen is the best overall Synthesia alternative — more realistic avatars, 175+
languages, and video translation on paid plans from $24/mo annual. Colossyan is the
L&D pick: SCORM export from $59/mo, not gated behind an enterprise contract. D-ID
starts at $4.70/mo for photo avatars and a real API. Elai ($23/mo annual) ingests
PDFs, decks and URLs. If you want an editor as much as an avatar, VEED (~$12/mo
annual) and Captions ($24.99/mo) are the short-form routes.
The six Synthesia alternatives we tested
Synthesia remains the enterprise default — credit pricing that got cheaper in 2026, a
real free tier, and the deepest compliance stack. The reasons teams still leave are
predictable: per-minute credit caps, SCORM locked to Enterprise, stock avatars that read
as synthetic, and a minute-based bill that punishes iteration. We ran the same three
deliverables (a 90-second explainer, a 5-language dub, a 5-minute LMS module) through:
| Alternative | Entry price (Oct 2026) | Free tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| HeyGen | Creator $29/mo, $24/mo annual | Yes (3 watermarked videos/mo) | Realism + video translation |
| Colossyan | Professional $59/mo annual | Yes (Starter: 20 NEO min, watermarked) | L&D, SCORM, branching quizzes |
| D-ID | Lite $4.70/mo annual ($5.90 monthly) | 14-day trial | Budget photo avatars + API |
| Elai | Creator $29/mo, $23/mo annual | Yes (1 min/mo) | PDF/URL/PowerPoint-to-video |
| VEED | Creator ~$12/mo annual ($147/yr) | Yes (watermarked) | Avatars inside a real editor |
| Captions | Max $24.99/mo | Yes (limited credits) | Short-form avatar ads (Mirage) |
| Synthesia (baseline) | Starter $29/mo, $18/mo annual | Yes (Basic: 10 min/mo, watermarked) | Enterprise L&D + governance |
Pricing as of October 2026 (vendor pricing pages). This category reprices often —
confirm before paying annually.
How we scored
Five dimensions, rated 1–5 from our three-deliverable run:
- Avatar realism — blind panel preference against Synthesia's stock library.
- Translation quality — lip-sync accuracy across the 5 dubbed languages.
- Workflow depth — editing, templates, collaboration, iteration cost.
- Value per finished minute — price divided by watermark-free minutes.
- LMS / SCORM fit — could the training module ship to an LMS without a contract?
Results
| Tool | Realism | Translation | Workflow | Value | LMS | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HeyGen | 4.7 | 4.8 | 4.2 | 4.4 | 4.0 | 4.4 |
| Colossyan | 4.1 | 3.9 | 4.3 | 3.7 | 4.8 | 4.2 |
| VEED | 4.0 | 4.2 | 4.7 | 4.5 | 2.0 | 4.1 |
| Captions | 4.5 | 4.0 | 4.4 | 3.6 | 1.5 | 3.9 |
| Elai | 3.7 | 3.8 | 4.0 | 4.1 | 3.0 | 3.7 |
| D-ID | 3.4 | 3.5 | 3.0 | 4.8 | 1.5 | 3.4 |
| Synthesia (baseline) | 4.0 | 4.4 | 4.6 | 3.5 | 5.0 | 4.2 |
Reading the table: Synthesia still wins on governance and LMS, and its credit model bills
only the seconds you change. What it loses on is realism — HeyGen's avatars won the
blind panel again — and on entry price per usable minute, where D-ID and VEED undercut it.
Verdict: HeyGen overall; Colossyan for L&D teams
HeyGen is the best Synthesia alternative in 2026 for marketing, sales and SMB training:
better avatars, translation on paid plans, and a $24/mo annual entry. L&D teams that need
SCORM without an enterprise contract should go straight to Colossyan at $59/mo annual.
Synthesia itself got cheaper and more generous in 2026 — if you already pass your security
review, re-price before you migrate.
The case for each
HeyGen — best overall
Avatar IV/V realism, 175+ languages, and 1-click video translation that preserves the
speaker's voice. Creator gives 600 credits/mo; the burn rate moves with the model you pick
(16 credits/min on an Avatar IV photo look, 31 on video, 48 on Avatar V), so the avatar —
not the platform — sets your real cost. Weakness: re-renders spend credits again, and
SCORM/LMS needs Business at $149/mo + $20/seat.
Colossyan — best for L&D
The only sub-enterprise plan here with SCORM export: Professional, $59/mo billed annually,
5 SCORM exports/mo, up to 3 editors, 30 NEO + 10 NEO2 minutes. Branching scenarios and
in-video quizzes are native. Two meter pools that do not lend to each other, and every
regenerate spends the full clip length again. Watermark only lifts at Professional.
D-ID — best budget & developer pick
Lite at $4.70/mo annual ($5.90 monthly) for 10 minutes is the cheapest entry in the
category, and the streaming API is the one to embed in a support bot or agent. Photo-driven
talking heads look less natural than video-trained twins; the watermark persists through
Lite and Pro — clean output needs Advanced (~$108/mo annual).
Elai — best document-to-video
Ingest a PDF, URL or .pptx and get an avatar-narrated video — removes the scriptwriting
step for teams that already own documentation. Creator $29/mo ($23 annual) for 15 min;
Team $125/mo ($100 annual) for 50 min, 4K and 3 editors. Now part of Panopto (acquired
October 2024); SCORM is still Enterprise-only, and voice cloning/selfie avatars are paid
add-ons (~$199–200/yr).
VEED — best editor-first
Avatars are one feature inside a full browser editor: timeline editing, auto-subtitles,
dubbing, and AI Playground access to Veo, Kling, Seedance and more on the same credits.
Creator ~$12/mo billed annually ($147/yr, 6,000 AI credits), Pro ~$22–24/mo (30,000
credits), Studio $39/mo. Plans are per seat and credits do not roll over. Weakest LMS
story of the six — this is for marketers, not training departments.
Captions — best for short-form ads
Mobile-first, powered by Mirage's own models (the company rebranded from Captions in
September 2025; the app kept the name). Max $24.99/mo for 500 credits, Frontier $69.99/mo
for 1,400; 8 seconds of generated avatar video costs 64 credits (~$3.20). AI Twins, AI Ads
and auto-edits are built for TikTok/Reels volume, not 5-minute training modules. Listed
prices are iOS plans — web and Android can differ.
What about Hour One?
Do not budget for Hour One. Wix acquired it in May 2025 and the standalone platform
was discontinued by October 2025; the site no longer responds and there are no signups.
Directory pages and old affiliate roundups still show $30/mo Lite plans — those are
historical prices for a product you cannot buy. Its closest live replacements are
Colossyan (training) and HeyGen (general avatar video). Similarly, avoid planning around
OpenAI's Sora: the app closed in April 2026 and its API was removed on September 24, 2026.
Free-tier reality check
- Synthesia Basic: 10 min/mo + 500 credits, watermarked — the most usable free tier here.
- Colossyan Starter: 20 NEO min/mo, but watermarked with no clean MP4 download.
- HeyGen Free: 3 videos/mo at 720p, 3-minute cap — a trial, not a plan.
- VEED Free and Captions Free: real editors, watermarked and credit-limited.
- Do not pay for a second avatar tool if one free tier already covers your test volume.
The bottom line
Synthesia's moat was governance; in 2026 everyone has avatars, and two of them look more
human. Export your three most-used Synthesia scripts into HeyGen and Colossyan free tiers
this week — if HeyGen's realism or Colossyan's $59 SCORM plan solves the blocker that made
you look, switch; if not, Synthesia's 2026 pricing ($18/mo annual Starter) is cheaper than
the migration. All figures verified on official pricing pages, October 2026.
