This is a submission for the Sanity Challenge, Path Two: Vibe-Code Something Strange
โก The Strange Premise: Why Do Deadline Trackers Always Lie?
Every engineering team has lived through this exact scenario:
It is Thursday afternoon. A core database migration slips by a seemingly harmless 45 minutes. Nobody panics because the ticket status is still technically "in progress." But three hours later, the downstream auth token cutover misses its compliance window, the payment gateway verification job times out, the edge CDN invalidation queues back up, and by 8:00 PM the release is burning to the ground.
Why? Because traditional project trackers treat milestones as disconnected, passive rows in a database. They display optimistic green checkboxes right up until the second everything collapses.
When Sanity announced the "Vibe-Code Something Strange" challenge, I didn't want to build another marketing landing page, an e-commerce catalog, or a personal portfolio. I wanted to explore a strange question:
What happens if you treat Sanity Content Lake not as a passive blog CMS, but as an active, graph-native causal incident simulator and DEFCON 1 war room?
What if every release milestone is a live structured document, every dependency is a directional causal vector with non-linear latency penalties, and Sanity Workflows autonomously detects when a minor slip crosses the doomsday threshold, locking cutovers and paging human incident commanders?
And what if operators can use the official Sanity App SDK (@sanity/sdk-react v3.7.0) directly inside the war room to bind in-memory document handles, perform sub-8ms optimistic mutations, toggle perspective projections, and cryptographically sign off cutovers with multi-sig attestation?
That is how CASCADE-ZERO was born.
๐ฎ What I Built: CASCADE-ZERO
CASCADE-ZERO is a real-time, browser-native causal disaster simulator and release governance console. It simulates high-stakes distributed systems deployments (Fintech rails, OAuth cutovers, database shard migrations, and edge CDNs) where delays cascade topologically through interconnected nodes.
Key Capabilities
- Topological Causal DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph): Milestones are structured documents in Sanity with strict SLA buffers and directional causal vectors. When an upstream milestone slips, downstream dependencies recalculate their delays, blast radius, and system risk in real time.
- Playable Timeline Scrubber & Chaos Matrix: Drag the time slider or inject real-world faults (Postgres Shard Lock Contention, Stripe Timeout, HSM Divergence, SOC2 Drift). Watch the graph pulse crimson and DEFCON escalate from 5 (Nominal) to 1 (Doomsday).
-
Official Sanity App SDK Studio (
@sanity/sdk-react v3.7.0): In-memory document handles bound viacreateDocumentHandle, sub-8ms optimistic patch mutations with async Content Lake acknowledgments, dynamic perspective projections (publishedvsdraftsvsraw), and a live mutation ledger. - Autonomous Sanity Workflows Governance: As systemic risk escalates, CASCADE-ZERO locks downstream release cutovers, generates a formal remediation proposal, and submits an incident mutation into Sanity Workflows. Releases cannot proceed without a 2/2 cryptographic multi-sig consensus.
- Zero-Asset Web Audio Synthesizer: No external mp3 files or sound packs. All mission control alarms, DEFCON sirens, cascade warning pings, and resolution chimes are generated procedurally on the fly using native Web Audio API oscillators.
- Interactive Sanity Lake Inspector: A built-in terminal allowing judges to inspect live GROQ queries, document schemas, and immutable transaction logs.

๐ง Thoughtfulness of the Architecture & Schema Behind It
Judges in Path Two look for projects where Sanity's structured content isn't just cosmetic, but forms the architectural foundation. In CASCADE-ZERO, causality, SLA tolerances, optimistic mutations, and release governance are modeled directly as structured documents:
1. The deadline Document Schema
Each horizon milestone is an autonomous document that defines its SLA threshold, blast radius multiplier, and doomsday penalty weight:
export const deadlineSchema = {
name: 'deadline',
title: 'Horizon Deadline Milestone',
type: 'document',
fields: [
{ name: 'id', title: 'Milestone ID', type: 'string' },
{ name: 'title', title: 'Milestone Title', type: 'string' },
{ name: 'category', title: 'Category', type: 'string' },
{ name: 'targetHours', title: 'Target Hours (T+)', type: 'number' },
{ name: 'slaBufferMinutes', title: 'SLA Buffer (Minutes)', type: 'number' },
{ name: 'blastRadius', title: 'Downstream Blast Radius', type: 'number' },
{ name: 'doomsdayWeight', title: 'Doomsday Penalty Multiplier', type: 'number' }
]
};
2. The causalVector Schema (Directed Graph Edge)
Traditional CMS schemas link articles to authors. Here, Sanity references represent directed causal relationships with non-linear latency coupling:
export const causalVectorSchema = {
name: 'causalVector',
title: 'Causal Vector (DAG Edge)',
type: 'document',
fields: [
{
name: 'source',
title: 'Upstream Dependency',
type: 'reference',
to: [{ type: 'deadline' }]
},
{
name: 'target',
title: 'Downstream Consumer',
type: 'reference',
to: [{ type: 'deadline' }]
},
{
name: 'weight',
title: 'Causal Coupling Weight',
type: 'number'
},
{
name: 'latencyPenalty',
title: 'Non-linear Latency Multiplier',
type: 'number'
}
]
};
3. The incidentWorkflow Schema (State Machine Governance)
When systemic risk exceeds safe operating limits, CASCADE-ZERO generates an incidentWorkflow document inside Sanity Content Lake that records DEFCON state transitions, audit mutations, and cryptographic multi-sig sign-offs:
export const incidentWorkflowSchema = {
name: 'incidentWorkflow',
title: 'Release Incident Governance',
type: 'document',
fields: [
{
name: 'stage',
title: 'Current Stage',
type: 'string',
options: {
list: ['draft', 'simulating', 'peer-review', 'approved', 'deployed']
}
},
{ name: 'defconLevel', title: 'System DEFCON (1-5)', type: 'number' },
{ name: 'systemDoomsdayScore', title: 'Risk Probability (%)', type: 'number' },
{
name: 'auditTrail',
title: 'Immutable Mutation Log',
type: 'array',
of: [{ type: 'object' }]
}
]
};
4. Official Sanity App SDK: Sub-8ms Optimistic Mutations & Perspective Projections
To transform CASCADE-ZERO into an authentic mission control tool, we integrated the official Sanity App SDK (@sanity/sdk-react v3.7.0 and @sanity/sdk v3.7.0):
// 1. Create Document Handle bound to Sanity Content Lake
import { createDocumentHandle } from '@sanity/sdk-react';
const handle = createDocumentHandle({
documentId: 'sec-auth-001',
documentType: 'deadline',
projectId: 'cascade-zero-live',
dataset: 'production'
});
// 2. Perform Sub-8ms Optimistic Patch Mutation
appSdk.mutateOptimistic('sec-auth-001', 'deadline', {
slaBufferMinutes: 45,
status: 'nominal',
modifiedAt: new Date().toISOString()
});
// 3. Project Perspective ('published' | 'drafts' | 'raw')
const view = appSdk.getProjection('drafts');
- In-Memory Document Handles: Lightweight metadata references that preserve persistent handles to microservice deadlines across renders.
-
Sub-8ms Optimistic Dispatch: When an engineer drags an SLA buffer slider or clicks "Boost", the UI resolves locally in under 8ms and asynchronously confirms with Content Lake revision streams (
rev-*). -
Perspective Projections: Operators can toggle between
published(strictly committed versions),drafts(in-flight disaster recovery draft state), andraw(system transaction digest layer) to audit proposed cutover patches before committing. - Human-in-the-Loop Multi-Sig Gate: Emergency cutover releases require 2/2 cryptographic consensus. Each operator's signature is hashed with a deterministic SHA-256 digest and committed to the live audit ledger.
๐ค The "Vibe-Code" Journey: What Worked vs. What Failed
Path Two is explicitly about the vibe-coding experience. Vibe-coding is not about blindly copy-pasting conversational output: it is about tightly steering an AI pair programmer through architectural friction, catching hallucinations, and refining interactions.
Here is the unvarnished reality of building CASCADE-ZERO:
The Prompt That Nailed the Architecture
"Construct a Next.js 16 topological DAG simulator where nodes represent Sanity documents of type
deadlineand edges representcausalVectordocuments. When an upstream node's delay exceeds itsslaBufferMinutes, propagate delay downstream with an exponential decay factor. Compute a global doomsday score (0-100) and elevate DEFCON level from 5 to 1."
The Win: The AI generated the core mathematical model for topological propagation in one clean pass, factoring in weighted couplings and SLA thresholds.
The Hallucination: Infinite Graph Cycles
When I prompted the AI to let users dynamically draw new causal vectors between milestones, it introduced a catastrophic bug: it didn't check for cyclic references.
Connecting Database Shard Migration to Settlement Gateway and back into Auth Core created an infinite recursion loop that locked the browser tab at 100% CPU.
// THE BUGGY AI ATTEMPT:
function propagate(nodeId, slip) {
edges.filter(e => e.source === nodeId).forEach(e => {
nodes[e.target].slip += slip * e.weight;
propagate(e.target, nodes[e.target].slip); // Stack overflow on circular graphs!
});
}
The Fix: I had to prompt specifically for Kahn's Algorithm for Topological Sorting, enforcing cycle detection before applying any causal propagation. If a cycle was detected, the simulator rejected the edge and emitted a visual warning.
Vibe-Coding Procedural Sound (Zero Assets)
I wanted authentic mission control audio, but I didn't want external sound files slowing down initial page loads.
"Write a pure Web Audio API synthesizer module in vanilla JavaScript that requires zero mp3 files. It must synthesize: a dual-tone DEFCON 1 siren, a rhythmic 60 BPM heartbeat pulse, high-frequency radar sweep chimes, and a gentle harmonic chord for incident resolution."
The Win: This was the most magical vibe-code moment. The AI generated pure mathematical oscillators (createOscillator(), gainNode.gain.exponentialRampToValueAtTime) that sound like a legit NASA control room. When DEFCON drops to 1, the dual-tone sweep immediately creates genuine urgency.

๐ Summary & What I Learned
Vibe-coding isn't about letting AI build generic boilerplate while you look away. The real power comes when you use AI as a high-velocity collaborator to explore genuinely unconventional architectures.
By treating Sanity Content Lake as a graph-native causal state engine rather than a passive store for marketing copy, CASCADE-ZERO demonstrates the true versatility of structured content. And with the official Sanity App SDK (@sanity/sdk-react), document handles and optimistic mutations provide the sub-8ms responsiveness demanded by mission critical infrastructure.
Built with Next.js 16, React 19, Sanity App SDK (@sanity/sdk-react v3.7.0, @sanity/sdk v3.7.0), Sanity Content Lake (@sanity/client), Web Audio API, Canvas Confetti, and Tailwind CSS.
