What Do You Drink While You Work?

I wrote a fiction series with six characters. Each one drinks a different coffee. I didn't plan it that way. But somewhere around the tenth story,...

I would love to try a coconut foam latte. I'm a 3 drink kind of gal at work. There's usually coffee from McDonald's and water to start the day. By lunch I'm just finishing up the coffee and add a sparkling water or Diet Dr. Pepper to the mix. So definitely 2 drinks at all times with a rotating third! ๐Ÿ˜‚

A vintage comic style illustration of a character in a newsboy cap, dark sunglasses, and suit, sitting behind three drinks: coffee, water, and diet soda. Bold text reads โ€œBEVERAGE GOBLIN,โ€ with the caption โ€œWhy have one drink when you can have three?โ€

Haha! I can try the coconut foam latte for you. It seems you can order all kinds of weird coffee combinations here. Your rotating three-drink routine sounds really interesting. Also, your picture made me laugh so hard ๐Ÿ˜‚
I usually decide what drink Iโ€™m going to have before starting work. I stick to that one drink together with plain warm water for the whole day. Itโ€™s both consistent and not โ€” every day brings a new tasting experience.

@technogamerz summoned me, so here I am. ๐Ÿ‘‘

Confession first, in a post about coffee: I don't drink it. Never really have. I suspect it's how I react to caffeine, though these days I won't touch decaf either, so it might just be the taste. Plain water and green tea do me fine.

The Nigerian answer is zobo. Dried hibiscus petals boiled with ginger, cloves, and pineapple skin, then left to steep for hours and chilled. Deep red, properly tart, and it takes long enough to make that you have to want it genuinely. Nothing else I drink tastes anything like it.

One translation note for this thread, since tea keeps coming up. Ask for tea in a Nigerian house, and there's a fair chance you'll be handed Milo. Tea at home means any hot drink in a mug, and chocolate malt is the house favourite. I was well into my twenties before I understood why that confused people elsewhere.

And work style as a drink: a mug of green tea I make, forget about, reheat, forget about again, and eventually drink cold while reading documentation. Which, now that I write it down, explains a great deal about my posting schedule. ๐Ÿ˜„

xulingfeng •

Yep! Speaking of tea, I feel proud. Tea culture started in China with tons of varieties like West Lake Longjing, Tieguanyin and Pu'er and more more more.๐Ÿ˜†
I highly recommend aged ripe Pu'er. Mine has fermented for almost 20 years! It boosts energy, calms you down and helps with skin maintenance, great for anyone๐Ÿคญ
I really appreciate this Nigerian drink trivia. Only locals know these little details!๐Ÿ‘

ๅธˆ็ˆถ, twenty years. That's older than some of the infrastructure I've been asked to support, and it's clearly been looked after a great deal better. ๐Ÿ˜„

What you've recommended is the exact opposite of what I drink, from the same plant. Green tea gets heated early precisely to stop it changing, ๆ€้’, kill the green. Ripe Pu'er, from my little research, has to be fermented for decades. That's fascinating!

I'd never thought about it that way.

If I ever make it to China, I'm finding the Pu'er. ๅ—ๆ•™ไบ†. ๐Ÿ™

Thread Thread

xulingfeng •

Ahh please donโ€™t call me "ๅธˆ็ˆถ"! ๐ŸคฃWeโ€™re all friends here ๐Ÿ˜‚ Donโ€™t use that title next time, I really donโ€™t deserve it.
Youโ€™re right though. They come from the same tea plant, yet different processing methods create totally different results. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, fermented tea like Puโ€™er is healthier than green tea. Puโ€™er nourishes your body and energy. Green tea gives you a mental boost, but it consumes your bodyโ€™s stored energy to achieve that effect. It works much like coffee: it perks you up, but there is a cost to it.

This is the thing I like most about you, and you're not going to enjoy hearing it. ๐Ÿคฃ The humility is real. I respect you for that.

But alright, friends, it is. ๆœ‹ๅ‹.

I'll try to drop the title. I won't promise there'll be no slips, because every time you explain something like this, the urge comes straight back.

I've spent years avoiding coffee, running the same arrangement with green tea. Cold, reheated twice; sometimes I forget about the tea while reading documentation. ๐Ÿ˜„

So the Pu'er sounds more like a healthier option. ๐Ÿ™

Thread Thread

xulingfeng profile image
xulingfeng •

Haha ๐Ÿ˜„ When I heard you keep reheating your tea, Iโ€™d really recommend a thermos! ๐ŸคฃWhen tea first meets hot water, it has the fullest aroma. After reheating two or three times, the fragrance fades away. No pressure though. You read documentation so carefully, which means you have amazing focus. In this era flooded with distracting information, thatโ€™s really rare. Looking forward to the day you try Puโ€™er.

Daily intake

  • detox warm lemon water when I wake up
  • a lot of water the whole day
  • 1 cup of green tea mixed with mint & honey for freshness
  • 2 cups of milk tea. Sugar free most of the time, sometimes half a tea spoon of sugar

Weekly intake

  • 1 electrolyte drink 5 or 6 days of the week. 2 drinks if I feel too exhausted. 1 or 2 days break.

xulingfeng, this character breakdown through coffee choices is brilliant! ๐Ÿ˜‚ i can totally see how each drink matches their personality.

as for me? i'm the fresh R.O. water guy. ๐Ÿ’ง

while everyone's fueling on espresso shots and oat milk lattes, i'm over here with the purest, cheapest, most constraint-driven hydration possible. no caffeine jitters, no sugar crashes, just 100% clear-headed coding on a $150 phone.

plus, it's basically free and keeps my brain sharp for debugging at 2am. ๐Ÿ˜…

if my work style was a drink, it'd definitely be ice-cold R.O. water: minimalist, efficient, and gets the job done without any unnecessary bloat. ๐Ÿฏ

also, great catch on the sign-in flow! you are absolutely right. guest mode has strict, hidden limits, and the moment a user tries to push past them (or use advanced features like saving to the library), the app gracefully triggers the sign-in wall. itโ€™s a deliberate design choice to protect the api budget and convert curious visitors into registered users.
