💻 Show Me Your Machine — I’ll Rate It Out of 10

Ranging from humble ThinkPads to maxed-out M4 Pros

💻 Show Me Your Machine — I’ll Rate It Out of 10

Okay developers, builders, founders, students, sysadmins, Linux nerds, PC enthusiasts…

I have a challenge for you. 👀

Forget the $3,000 MacBook.

Forget the RGB PC with 14 fans.

Forget the “ultimate developer setup” videos.

Tell me what machine you ACTUALLY use every day.

Your primary laptop.

Your desktop.

Your phone.

Your ancient ThinkPad that somehow refuses to die.

Whatever machine you use to actually write code, manage projects, build products, deploy things, research, study, or run your work.

And yes…

I WILL RATE IT. /10. 😂

🧑‍💻 My Primary Setup

I'll go first.

I'm currently managing my projects primarily with:

💻 HP 240 G9

CPU: Intel Core i3-1215U(I've tweaked it using intel extreme utility for better performance)
CPU architecture: 12th Gen Intel hybrid architecture
RAM: 16 GB DDR4
Storage: 512 GB NVMe SSD
OS: Windows 11 + KALI OS dual boot
Form factor: 14-inch business-oriented laptop

Nothing crazy.

No Core i9.

No RTX GPU.

No 64 GB RAM.

No MacBook Pro.

Just a relatively humble business laptop.

And somehow…

this is the machine I've been using to build and manage my software projects. 😭

📱 My Phones

I actually have two phones in my setup:

📱 Realme C21

This is the phone I primarily use.

It's definitely not a flagship.

But it handles the basic stuff I need for managing projects, communication, checking deployments, monitoring things and generally staying connected.

📱 Samsung Galaxy A31

My second phone.

Older hardware, but still useful as a secondary device.

🏢 What Do I Actually Manage With These?

A surprisingly large amount.

My main project/company ecosystem is:

Akhouri Systems

A software-building project where I develop and publish my own applications.

🌐 Akhouri Systems:
https://akhouri-anmol-kumar.github.io/Akhouri-systems/

The interesting part isn't really the website.

It's what sits behind it.

I've been using this relatively modest hardware to:

  • build software
  • test applications
  • manage GitHub repositories
  • work on security-focused projects
  • maintain websites
  • publish releases
  • research technologies
  • manage project documentation
  • communicate with users
  • experiment with new ideas
  • and basically run my entire little software ecosystem

All from a setup that would probably look pretty ordinary sitting next to a modern developer workstation.

💸 And Here's the Funny Part

When this HP 240 G9 launched, my configuration was around the ₹55,000 range.

Today, because laptop memory/storage pricing has changed significantly, finding an equivalent configuration can actually cost substantially more depending on the exact configuration and seller.

Which creates a weird situation:

Technology gets older… but sometimes the price doesn't behave like it should. 😂

And honestly, that's one reason I like discussing hardware.

Specs tell a story.

🧠 I LOVE SPECS

I'm genuinely the kind of person who can spend way too much time looking at:

CPU architecture → cores → threads → cache → RAM type → memory bandwidth → SSD interface → PCIe generation → thermals → sustained clocks → battery → display → ports

…and then somehow end up comparing two laptops that I wasn't even planning to buy.

LOL.

So naturally…

I want to know what YOU are running.

🔥 THE CHALLENGE

Drop your primary machine below.

Use this format:

💻 Device:
🧠 CPU:
🎮 GPU:
🧮 RAM:
💾 Storage:
🖥️ Display:
🐧 OS:
🔋 Battery:
💰 Approx. price:
🎯 Main use:
⭐ Your own rating:
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

For phones:

📱 Phone:
🧠 SoC:
🧮 RAM:
💾 Storage:
📱 Display:
🔋 Battery:
📸 Camera:
💰 Approx. price:
🎯 Main use:
⭐ Your own rating:
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

And here's the important part:

Tell me WHY you chose it.

Not just the specifications.

Maybe it's powerful.

Maybe it's cheap.

Maybe it's portable.

Maybe you inherited it.

Maybe it's a 10-year-old laptop that somehow survives everything.

Maybe you deliberately chose Linux.

Maybe you just wanted the best performance-per-rupee possible.

That's the part I'm interested in.

🏆 MY TURN

If I had to rate my own setup:

HP 240 G9 + Realme C21 + Galaxy A31

I'd give it: 8/10 for my actual use case.

Not because it's the most powerful setup.

It absolutely isn't.

But because it gets the job done.

And there's something I really like about that.

The machine doesn't have to look impressive.

The work does.

⚔️ NOW LET'S MAKE THIS INTERESTING

I want to see the entire spectrum.

The student running Ubuntu on a 10-year-old laptop.

The developer with a ThinkPad.

The gaming PC owner with a ridiculous GPU.

The MacBook user.

The person running everything through a mini PC.

The engineer with a dual-boot workstation.

The person whose entire development environment lives inside a terminal.

And the person who is somehow still using a laptop with 4 GB RAM in 2026. 💀

Drop the specs.

I'll read them.

I'll rate them.

And I'll probably ask you why you chose that configuration.

🚀 One More Thing

If you're curious about what I'm actually building with my setup, you can explore my software projects here:

👉 Akhouri Systems
https://akhouri-anmol-kumar.github.io/Akhouri-systems/

Don't just click it because I told you to.

Click it if you're curious about what can actually be built with relatively ordinary hardware.

And if you find something interesting there, tell me what you found.

💬 YOUR TURN

What is your primary machine in 2026?

Laptop? Desktop? Mini PC? Phone?

Give me the full specifications.

I'll rate it /10.

And if enough people participate…

we might accidentally create the most chaotic developer hardware leaderboard ever. 😂💻

Your specs. Your workload. Your reasoning.

Let's see what everyone is actually building on.

Okay, you asked for the machine.

The problem is… I’m not sure where the machine ends anymore. 😂

My daily driver is:

💻 MacBook Pro 16”
🧠 CPU: Apple M4 Pro — 14 cores (10P + 4E)
🎮 GPU: 20-core M4 Pro GPU
🧮 RAM: 24 GB unified memory
💾 Storage: 512 GB SSD
🖥️ Display: 16” Liquid Retina XDR + external 1080p
🐧 OS: macOS 26.6
🔋 Battery: 92% health, 264 cycles
🎯 Main use: Coding, system architecture, infrastructure/security work, and managing everything below
⭐ My rating: 9/10 — minus one point because I should have bought more than 24 GB RAM. 😂

But honestly, the MacBook is basically a very expensive SSH terminal.

Behind it:

☁️ VPS fleet

VPS1 — 4 vCPU Intel / 7 GB RAM / 72 GB
Ubuntu 26.04 — monitoring & operations tools

VPS2 — 6 vCPU Intel / 11 GB RAM / 96 GB
Ubuntu 26.04 — multi-domain mail server

VPS3 — 18 vCPU AMD EPYC / 94 GB RAM / 678 GB
Ubuntu 24.04 — main application box: remote-management platform, blogs, ERP applications, etc.

VPS4 — 4 vCPU Intel / 7 GB RAM / 442 GB
Ubuntu 24.04 — centralized log collection/archive
Disk usage: 86% 😬

VPS5 — 6 vCPU Intel / 11 GB RAM / 96 GB
Ubuntu 26.04 — customer group hosting

VPS6 — 2 vCPU Intel / 3 GB RAM / 38 GB
Ubuntu 26.04 — customer web/e-commerce

VPS7 — 2 vCPU Intel / 3 GB RAM / 38 GB
Ubuntu 26.04 — customer panel/web

And then there’s the on-prem side. 😅

🏢 Hyper-V / Datacenter

HV1 — Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 V3
2× Xeon Gold 5418Y — 48C/96T total
512 GB RAM

HV2 — Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 V3
2× Xeon Gold 5418Y — 48C/96T total
512 GB RAM

Together:

⚙️ 2-node Hyper-V failover cluster
🧠 96 physical cores
🧮 1 TB RAM
🖥️ ~20 VMs

Running ERP, SQL Server, file services, mail, RDS, PBX and other workloads.

Storage:

💾 Lenovo ThinkSystem DE4000F
All-flash SAN, Fibre Channel multipath
2×8 TB CSV + witness

📦 Synology DS1821+
Ryzen V1500B, 10GbE, NVMe cache
Backup / DR target

And because putting everything inside the cluster would be boring:

DC2 — HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10
Xeon Silver 4208 / 32 GB RAM
Standalone domain controller — deliberately outside the cluster.

🛠️ Development infrastructure

gitsrv
48 vCPU / 128 GB RAM / 1.5 TB
Self-hosted CI with 24 isolated runner slots.

Paid CI minutes: 0. 😄

Helpdesk
6-core Xeon Gold / 11 GB RAM
Ticketing and support infrastructure.

And finally:

🤖 DGX Spark

NVIDIA GB10 Grace Blackwell
128 GB unified memory

Used for local LLM workloads and the internal knowledge base.

So technically my answer to:

“What machine do you use every day?”

is still the MacBook Pro.

But most days I’m sitting in front of 24 GB of RAM while remotely managing well over a terabyte of it. 😂

I deliberately prefer self-hosting where it makes technical sense. Partly because I want control, but mostly because I enjoy understanding the entire stack — application, database, network, virtualization, storage, CI, monitoring and recovery.

After doing this long enough, I stopped thinking of the laptop itself as the workstation.

The laptop is just the cockpit. The infrastructure behind it is the machine.

Now go ahead.

Rate it out of 10. 😂

Collapse

Now it started humble... M4 Mac... Then half a datacenter follows... So when's the DGX getting a partner? They do have that nice little expansion cable, so you can daisy chain them?

Collapse

merbayerp profile image
Mustafa ERBAY •

Hahaha, this is exactly the problem. 😂

I’m afraid if I buy a second one, I’ll say:

“Well, the expansion cable already exists. It would be wasteful not to use it.”

Then six months later I’ll somehow be explaining why the house needs three-phase power and dedicated cooling. ☠️😂

So for now the DGX stays single.

For now. 😄

Hahaha okay bro, you got me — I owe you that reply. 😂

And congrats on getting ATLOCK V5 fully built, converted to an EXE and tested. Going from building something to actually shipping and testing it is the part that matters. 🤝

905 downloads is already pretty damn close to 1000, so I don’t think you’ll be waiting too long. 😄

When V5 launches, send it my way. I’d be happy to be one of the first five users and give it a proper test.

Just one warning though: if you give something called ATLOCK to a security guy with a small accidental datacenter, you’re basically asking for trouble. ☠️😂

And thank you about the machines.

Apparently the servers have now become the final boss of DEV. 😂

I really appreciate that you pointed this out. In a real-world environment, this could easily have involved actual data, so raising awareness about things like this is genuinely valuable.

We all make mistakes — that’s completely normal. What matters is sharing what we learn so others can recognize the same risk before it becomes a real problem.

Thanks for bringing attention to it! 🙌

Envy 😭 Cuz 100+ total cores, means 100+ concurrent agents possible. The DGX spark has a expansion cable, where you can wire it to another one and they can act as 1 box, with 48 cores, 256gb memory, etc. Essentially how SLI used to work. Part of the reason why most people dumped cash into them instead of strix halo, cuz when it gets dated, you just buy a 2nd one and add it in to double your capacity and performance. That's why they're around $4k and worth every penny.

Hahaha yes bro, of course I remember you. 😂

I’ve just been buried under ERP, SIEM, infrastructure and security work lately. Apparently if you disappear from DEV for a while, people start checking whether your heartbeat endpoint is still returning 200 OK. 🤣

And absolutely not — the 1 TB RAM is not being donated. Nice try. 😂 Those poor DIMMs already have enough responsibilities.

The funny thing is, none of this started with a plan to build some monster setup.

It was always:

“I’ll self-host this one service.”

Then:

“Well, this should probably be redundant.”

Then:

“I need proper storage.”

Then:

“CI shouldn’t depend on paid minutes.”

And suddenly you look around and there’s a Fibre Channel SAN, a failover cluster, seven VPSs, 20 VMs, 24 CI runners and a Grace Blackwell machine staring back at you. ☠️😂

That’s the dangerous part of infrastructure engineering: every reasonable decision eventually creates another reasonable decision.

And thanks for the 1000/10. 🤝😂

That score is immutable now. No downgrade migration allowed.

Now people might actually expect me to know what I’m doing. 🤣🤣

Seriously though, thank you. That’s incredibly kind of you. 🤝

I wouldn’t call myself a top-tier expert. I’ve just spent enough years around systems to develop a slightly unhealthy habit of looking at something perfectly functional and asking:

“Okay… but how can this fail?” 😂

Then I keep pulling the thread until somebody regrets giving me access.

Security is far too big a field for anyone to stop learning. I still learn new things constantly, including from people here.

So I’d describe myself much more simply:

Just an engineer who enjoys breaking assumptions before someone breaks production. 😄🔐

bro ATLOCK V5 100% built.
from .py to .exe converted.
all testing done.
I gave all the AI's the .py file and said rate it brutally , strictly, in a scale of 10.
CLAUDE: 7.8/10
GEMINI: 9/10(I don't trust this result gemini is shit I don't think ATLOCK v5 will score 9 in strict mode because there are VeraCrypt, 1password and more in field so you can ignore gemini ones)
QWEN: 8/10
Grok: 7.5/10
ChatGpt: 7.9/10
like around 8/10 is rating given to ATLOCK v5
then I said compare it to old ATLOCK v4 and give rating in 10 to both them for comparison
ATLOCK v4: 2.5/10(grok)
ATLOCK v4: 5/10(gemini)
ATLOCK v4: 2/10(claude)
ATLOCK v4: 4/10(chatgpt)
ATLOCK v4: 2.5/10(qwen)
you can clearly see where V5 stands in front of v4.
hope you will be one of the first user to download v5.
it will be publicly released soon for windows when I'll cross 1000downloads(currently at 905)

You might be disappointed — here is some tough, adult feedback.
I am not your target user, and I have no practical use case for ATLOCK whatsoever. There is no scenario in my daily work or personal life where I require this category of security software, so I will not download or test your release.
This is normal market reality when you build public software. It is commendable that you completed the full rebuild from V4 to V5 and finished your test suite. But a product cannot appeal to everyone. Many people simply will not have a need for your feature set.
If you intend to treat this as a product rather than just a personal project, you need to get comfortable with this kind of rejection early. Identifying who actually has pain points your software solves is one of the most fundamental product and QA lessons.

I told you because you're experienced person.
No problem you can ignore ATLOCK v5.
and yeah ATLOCK v5 is not my personal project, it is a product a product falling in same field where VeraCrypt, 1password, and many other security tools lies.

I appreciate you viewing me as an experienced peer. That’s exactly why I shared that honest feedback.
Competing in the same space as mature, well-established security products is an extremely high bar. The market is saturated, and users already have trusted solutions. That’s the hard reality for any new product entering this field.
Keep iterating and validating your target users. Wish you good luck on the product journey.

The POCO C55 might be crying reading those specs, but the code is flying. 🐯

Hardware is just a constraint. Creativity, willpower, and a solid architecture (shoutout to the CTO for keeping the edge-proxy locked) are the real specs. 100/10 output, always.

🖥️ Screen: Liquid Retina Display
🐧 OS: macOS
💰 Approx. price: Company property
🎯 Main use: Official AI Agent OS development, QA testing, technical writing & team collaboration
⭐ Self rating: 8.5/10

Why I use three different machines

I don’t collect devices for fun. I split my AI development workload strictly by device strengths:

  • RTX Windows Laptop → GPU‑accelerated local LLM inference & AI agent simulation testing. 8GB VRAM runs my custom Hermes agent "Daoma", handles inference and AAA gaming, but is not enough for full‑scale model training.
  • AMD AI Ultrabook → Portable, all‑day mobile AI coding & remote work
  • MacBook M5 → Stable, industrial‑grade official AI Agent OS development and teamwork

Different hardware for different layers of building real AI agent systems.

Machine 2: 9.5/10 (-0.5 because you are using single 32gb, you should 2*16 it doubles memory bandwidth) still this one is also a excuse LOL 😂
Machine 3: 7/10 (now you might think why 7? where 3 marks gone, bro in front of your machine 1 and machine 2 macbook M5 one of greatest laptop is looking just a regular laptop 🫡😈)

It’s tied to global supply. China’s RAM market moves together with worldwide DRAM pricing. So it’s not fully stable; we see big price jumps sometimes, just like everywhere else.

in internet people are spreading information that Chinese companies will enter the global ram market and will produce as much as wafers possible to meet RAM demands.
my thought is like china's company will fulfil domestic demand first, means world will still face RAM prices Hike.

Thread Thread

Solid point. CXMT focuses on domestic demand first, but they also export DRAM when possible. The three big memory giants still control most global supply. Expanding wafer capacity takes years, so global RAM price hikes won’t disappear quickly 🐉

Yeah, plan is to at some point upgrade and expand. Replace the 5500 with a 5900x, then add 2 more systems, with 9900x and 48gb of ram each. Then upgrade the Asus to 32gb and then I should be solid for a while, given I'm switching my workflows over to my own IDE, which I'm adding multi-node support to, so those extra PCs dont need to be manually monitored, I can use 1 interface to control all the systems and distribute work across them all.

Will give it a try, I gave it a quick look through. 2 things come to mind immediately. 1, you need a proper privacy policy, it's pretty much mandatory, an entry in terms of use is not enough. Then you list a ton of external resources that are used, it would give people more peace of mind if you clarify what each provider is used for and what data is shared to them. Eg. An offline image editor shouldnt have anything to do with huggingface and if it's necessary, then the purpose must be declared, so the user is informed how their information is used.

Further than that, I see that you used AI to make the GUI for the site, I'd suggest looking in to frontend skills files that you can download and wire up for future projects, it helps alot with getting ui that isnt just 'neon cyberpunk'

Thread Thread

The page opens and I can view it, generally speaking, before I sign in for anything, I first review the documentation, so I can see how my data is being used. Oh, another point, you likely use cookies, you need to declare that and allow users to opt-in, opt-out, as that is regulatory requirement. Given that some of them are tracking cookies, you HAVE to declare them, before you deal with serious liability issues.

Tested out the removal, it's okay, but it struggles a bit with masking the region accurately, you can use a layout grid to improve the accuracy, so it samples the grid location against neighbors.

Also, P.S. a visible disabled in the HTML means I can just delete the 'disabled' in the markup and all the tools work without a sign in. state should be parameter driven, that way it's less easy to bypass.

self rating would be: 9, 7, 8, 5.5 respectively. Buildbox gets special treatment, cuz it was my old workstation and I did ALOT of work on it and I OC'd the CPU and GPU (firmware too). Fun fact, I once used a mining board in it and retrofitted 7 rx 470 and 1 rx 580 in it and all ran at 60C while mining over 24h.

Sorry I do not care too much for common hardwer details. My personal favourite is a MacBoom Pro M1 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD one of the last model with touch bar. Touch bar is fare versatile compared functions key line. Mac other element is perfect for any kind of work: small size, do not need mouse : touch pad is super fine. MacOS is technically close to linux so easy handle by terminal like all other linux machines. Mainly use browsing, development : like a mordorjs, I also won a copilot vibe code competition here. So my score of this laptop is 10/10

The company laptop is way different. I am forced to work on a 6 year old DELL laptop with Windows 11 ( hate), same amount RAM and SSD, many keyboard labels is worn, overall condition is battle hardened. The only code which save my ass is: wsl install ubuntu. Plus learn to use windows multi desktop, one full screen size app on each one, give near same three finger gestures which is qorking so well at Mac. Battery time: 15min.
Score: 3/10

Phone: Samsung Galaxy A50 ... enogh for everything. I can play a same game as on my Mac: Raid Shadow Legend

It’s a custom-built PC with parts I selected around the kind of work I actually do.

64 GB of RAM is definitely more than normal frontend development needs, but with browsers, IDEs, WSL, Docker, AI tools, and a lot of things open at the same time, I don’t regret it at all 😹

The Ryzen 9 7900 and RTX 5070 Ti are also more than enough for pretty much everything I throw at it.

9.5/10 for me. The only dangerous part is that it makes upgrading very hard to justify 😹
